Chapter 07: Knowledge and Realization
श्रीभगवानुवाच मय्यासक्तमनाः पार्थ योगं युञ्जन्मदाश्रयः । असंशयं समग्रं मां यथा ज्ञास्यसि तच्छृणु ॥७- १॥

ज्ञानं तेऽहं सविज्ञानमिदं वक्ष्याम्यशेषतः । यज्ज्ञात्वा नेह भूयोऽन्यज्ज्ञातव्यमवशिष्यते ॥७- २॥

मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु कश्चिद्यतति सिद्धये । यततामपि सिद्धानां कश्चिन्मां वेत्ति तत्त्वतः ॥७- ३॥

[Among] siddhānām8 = the perfected ones; api7 = in fact; yatatām6 = who are striving; kaścit9 = one by chance; vetti11 = knows; mām10 = Me; tattvataḥ12 = in truth. 7.3
7.3:
Out of thousands of men, someone strives for perfection. Of those

taste in the water, O Son of Kunti; I am the light

बलं बलवतां चाहं कामरागविवर्जितम् । धर्माविरुद्धो भूतेषु कामोऽस्मि भरतर्षभ ॥७- ११॥

ये चैव सात्त्विका भावा राजसास्तामसाश्च ये । मत्त एवेति तान्विद्धि न त्वहं तेषु ते मयि ॥७- १२॥

7.12: Know that all
states of being, such as Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas proceed thus from Me. I am

त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरेभिः सर्वमिदं जगत् । मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्यः परमव्ययम् ॥७- १३॥

7.13: Deluded by the
threefold nature of the Gunas, the whole universe of beings does not know Me
because I am above all these, supreme and imperishable (and

दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया । मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते मायामेतां तरन्ति ते ॥७- १४॥

न मां दुष्कृतिनो मूढाः प्रपद्यन्ते नराधमाः । माययापहृतज्ञाना आसुरं भावमाश्रिताः ॥७- १५॥

ignorant, and the lowest among men, who are robbed of their knowledge by

चतुर्विधा भजन्ते मां जनाः सुकृतिनोऽर्जुन । आर्तो जिज्ञासुरर्थार्थी ज्ञानी च भरतर्षभ ॥७- १६॥

तेषां ज्ञानी नित्ययुक्त एकभक्तिर्विशिष्यते । प्रियो हि ज्ञानिनोऽत्यर्थमहं स च मम प्रियः ॥७- १७॥

teṣām1 = Of them; jñānī2 = Jnani, man of Knowledge; nitya-yuktaḥ3 = in constant union with [Me]; eka-bhaktiḥ4 = in one-pointed devotion; viśiṣyate5 = is superior. hi7 = Accordingly; aham11 = I; [am] atyartham10 = greatly; priyaḥ6 = dear; jñāninaḥ8 = to the man of Knowledge; ca13 = and; saḥ12 = he; [is] priyaḥ15 = dear; mama14 = to me. 7.17
7.17: Of these, the Jnāni
(the wise one), who is always in union with Me and whose devotion is
single-minded is the best. I am very dear to that Jnāni, and he is very dear

उदाराः सर्व एवैते ज्ञानी त्वात्मैव मे मतम् । आस्थितः स हि युक्तात्मा मामेवानुत्तमां गतिम् ॥७- १८॥

[This is] me9 = My; matam10 = opinion; hi13 = for; saḥ12 = he; [whose] yuktātmā14 = mind is engaged; [and] āsthitaḥ11 = abiding; mām15 eva16 = in Me15 alone16; [has Me as] anuttamām17 = the unsurpassed; gatim18 = goal. 7.18
7.18: All these (four kinds
of people) are noble, but the Jnāni, I consider, as truly My Self. In my
opinion, he whose mind abides in Me alone has Me as the unsurpassed

बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते । वासुदेवः सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः ॥७- १९॥

ante3 = At the end; bahūnām1 = of many; janmanām2 = births; jñānavān4 = man of wisdom; prapadyate6 = takes refuge [in], arrive [at], resort; mām5 = to Me; vāsudevaḥ7 = Vasudeva. iti9 = As you know; [Vasudeva is] sarvam8 = all; saḥ10 = he; [who knows Me as such is] mahātmā11 = a great soul; [who is] su-durlabhaḥ12 = difficult to be obtained. 7.19
7.19: After many births and
at the end (of the last birth), the man of wisdom takes refuge in Me, in his
knowledge that Vasudeva is all there is

कामैस्तैस्तैर्हृतज्ञानाः प्रपद्यन्तेऽन्यदेवताः । तं तं नियममास्थाय प्रकृत्या नियताः स्वया ॥७- २०॥

[They] hṛta-jñānāḥ3 = shorn of wisdom; [and subject to] taiḥ taiḥ2 = many disparate; kāmaiḥ1 = desires prapadyante4 = take refuge; [in] anya5 = other; devatāḥ6 = gods; [and] niyatāḥ11 = restrained; svayā12 = by their own; prakṛtyā10 = nature; āsthāya9 = perform; tam tam7 = appropriate or respective; niyamam8 = rites. 7.20

यो यो यां यां तनुं भक्तः श्रद्धयार्चितुमिच्छति । तस्य तस्याचलां श्रद्धां तामेव विदधाम्यहम् ॥७- २१॥

7.21: Whatever is the
form of deity, whom a devotee desires to

स तया श्रद्धया युक्तस्तस्याराधनमीहते । लभते च ततः कामान्मयैव विहितान्हि तान् ॥७- २२॥

7.22: Endowed with that
faith, he worships that god, and fulfills his desires, granted by Me alone.

अन्तवत्तु फलं तेषां तद्भवत्यल्पमेधसाम् । देवान्देवयजो यान्ति मद्भक्ता यान्ति मामपि ॥७- २३॥

7.23: Finite and limited is
the fruit gained by these men of small intelligence (small minds). The
worshippers of gods go to those gods, but my devotees

अव्यक्तं व्यक्तिमापन्नं मन्यन्ते मामबुद्धयः । परं भावमजानन्तो ममाव्ययमनुत्तमम् ॥७- २४॥
