I. Longings for endless joy. Would birth in earthly forms might cease, devoted love so might I gain ! O Civa-Peruman, Whose form is beauteous like red lotus-flower; Thou art my rare Ambrosia; midst the assembly of Thy saints Thy sacred grace unique show Thou; be gracious, take me too and save (4) |
1. I should not
be born in the world again, and if I am born I
should be devoted only to you. O lord Shiva with a lovely form, you are like the red lotus and sweet nectar. Come and stay among your devotees with your divine
form and give us your grace and save us. [599] |

II. He pleads the promise. I'm not my own, Thy slave am I; sever'd from Thee no moment can I live; a cur, I nothing know,- O Cankaran! In pitying grace Thou Mighty said'st to me, 'Behold,' and showed'st Thy jewell'd feet. Our Lord, And was the promise false that said, 'I sever nevermore from Thee?' (8) |
2. Even though I am not to fit to be your slave, I cannot live on this earth even for one day
separated from you. I am a dog and do not
know what to do. O Sankara, is it not true that you came to me, showed me your ornamented feet and gave me your
grace, saying, “I will not be separated from you!”? Are you not my dear lord? [600] |

III. Love that 'maketh not ashamed.' Melting my frame, granting Thy grace, showing to me Thy flow'ry feet, Erewhile Thou madest me Thine own, O Sage, O First of sages all ! My Bliss, Thou didst dissolve my soul, and dost my life consume. Grant me Thy love, King of my soul; that so Thy grace from shame may shield ! (12) |
3. You gave me your grace melting my bones and showed me your lotus feet. O highest sage, you made
me yours, gave me joy, melted my heart and saved my life. You are my close friend and dear as life. Give me your grace without hesitating. [601] |

IV. He laments his deadness of soul. Of piety I'm void, nor bow at vision of Thy golden feet; My heart is dead, my lips are seal'd;- yet cause this 'birth' to cease, our Lord ! Pearl-like Thou art, gem-like Thou art ! First One, I utter my complaint: So oft I've follow'd Thee, henceforth apart from Thee I bear not life ! (16) |
4. Even though I do not have devotion for you, even though I do not worship you blissfully as I gaze at your precious beautiful feet, even though I do not
prattle your names, still you take away my
future births. O great lord, you are a pearl. a jewel, and the first one of the world. Wherever I am, I cannot live separated from you.

V. Spiritual declension. I see Thy gracious feet no more, which seeing erst mine eyes were glad; I've ceased to cherish Thee; I've ceased to utter childlike praise; and thus Tanu, my mighty Lord, I'm lost; the state, that melting thinks on Thee, By meannesses I've ceas'd to know; 'twere shame to me to see Thee come ! (20) |
5. I lost the desire to see you with my eyes, and joyfully join your divine feet, and I did not desire to prattle your names. O great lord, Thanu,
I am destroyed. Because I have no goodness, I have lost the desire to melt in my heart and
think of you.
If you come to see me, I will be ashamed. [603] |

VI. Supplication. Thee, Lord supreme, with milk-white ash adorn'd, meeting with grace superne Thy servants true, Who dost appear, and show the hav'n of grace,- Thee, glorious Light, I, void of righteousness, Extol as my Ambrosia, praising Thee,- praise, glorify, invoke with weepings loud ! Master, thus working in me mightily, in grace O speak, in pity speak ! (24) |
6. O lord, highest one, smeared with divine ashes
as white as milk, bright light, you appear with compassion before your true devotees, giving us your grace. Even though I am immoral, still I praise
you, saying, “You are my nectar!” and I call you,
crying. Won't you come to me and give me your grace, comfort me, and make me yours? [604] |
