I. No requital of electing grace. The ancient fourfold mystic word draws not anigh His seat;- Nor Mal nor Ayan Him have seen; yet me, the most abject, By grace He made His servant ! To Gokari's King, my heart, Say, is there any just return ? (4) anigh = prep. 1. near; close to. adv. 2. nearby; close by. |
1. The ancient four Vedas and Brahma
could not find the lord searching for him, the god of Thirukkokkazi. O heart, he took me, a low one, as his servant and gave me his grace. Tell me, how can I repay him? [628] |
II. The great manifestation in Perun-turrai. Praise Perun-turrai ! There the King, who on the charger (= Horse) came, Abides, and gives a mighty flood of honied sweetness forth, By which my soul's threefold impurity is swept away;- So roots of 'birth's' wild forest die ! (8) |
2. O people, the generous lord came riding on an illusory horse like a flood of honey and removed the three sins of the world. If you praise Thirupperundurai where the lord stays, you will destroy your future forest-like births. [629) |
III. He assumes many characters to save men. In wilds a Hunstsman; in sea He casts a net; On land He rides the charger: thus our 'deeds' destroys. The fair foot-flower of Perun-turrai's Lord praise Thou, My heart, that error thus may die ! (12) |
3. The god of Thirupperundurai came to the forest disguised as a hunter. As a fisherman, he threw nets to catch fish in the ocean. And he came riding on a horse to remove our karma and give us his grace. O heart, worship his lotus feet and your ignorance will be gone. [630] |
IV. The centre of Worship. Householders devout; saints who mighty 'deeds' destroy;- Those whom 'tis meet the world should bow before, and praise;- Immortals too in worship circling move, and laud ! O friends, In Perun-turrai blest adore ! (16) |
4. The many devotees who come to divine Thirpperundurai and worship the lord, living happily, praised by the world, and ridding themselves of their karma are my people. [631] |
V. Come, see the King. To Perun-turrai drawing near; that woes disperse, Ponder the King of lofty Gokari; and see Him Who with Her whose words are music sweet abides In Utt'ra-koca-mangai's shrine ! (20) |
5. The lord, the king of Thirukkokkazhi, stays with his wife whose words are like music and will not leave that place. O devotees, go there and see him and all your troubles will be removed. [632] |
VI. Ever praise the God of Perun-turrai. The eyes that see Him there are all a rapture of delight;- The saints that cherish Him are freed from mortal birth;- The Mighty One, in Perun-turrai dwells for aye;- My heart, give Him unstinted praise ! (24) |
6. He gives his grace and takes away the future births of his devotees
even if they feel that all the things they see give them happiness. O heart, praise the the highest lord of Thirupperundurai who will not leave that place ever. [633] |
VII. 'Perun-turrai' is the saving word. This is the purport sole of all men say; all speech Surpassing, gem-like word, as flawless jewels' sheen ! Utt'ring but 'PERUN-TURRAI,' I'm from 'births' released; That healing foot fixt in my mind ! (28) |
7. The lord, a jewel, is the meaning of all words. I praise Thirupperundurai with jewel-like words and worship his divine feet keeping them in my heart. They are the remedy for all my troubles and they take away my future births. [634] |
