Hymn XLVII.- tiruvenba  THE SACRED VENBA  [THE STATE OF 'THOSE WHO HAVE ATTAINED.']   Translation Dr. G.U.Pope  Shaivam.org 47. Thiru venba   Translation: Dr. Kausalya Hart  Madurai Project

This purports to have been composed immediately after his return to Perun-turrai, when he was hoping for speedy consummation, but felt impatient.
I. How shall I endure this state of imperfection?
What shall I do while twofold deeds' fierce flame burns still out,-
Nor doth the body melt,- nor falsehood fall to dust ?
In mind no union gained with the 'Red Firs's honey'
The Lord of Perun-turrai fair ! (4)
1. I have not thought of the lord the bright fire
of beautiful Thirupperundurai where flowers drip with honey.
My good and bad karma burn me
and my body has not melted
and my lies have not fallen to pieces.
What can I do? [617]
II. How employ the weary time of waiting?
Shall I cry out, or wail, or dance, or sing, or watch?
O Infinite, what shall I do? The Sire Who fills
With rapturous amaze,- great Perun-turrai's Lord
Let all with me bending adore ! (8)
2. Should I shout and call you?
Should prattle your name?
Should I dance for you?
Should I sing your fame?
Should I praise your devotees?
O highest lord, what can I do?
He is the god of Thirupperundurai, our master,
and he gives us blissful happiness.
Who could fail to worship him?
Who could claim he is a master
when the real master is the lord? [618)
III. The wonder of his conversion.
No sense of fault had I ! Nor of refreshment knew.
In safety's path, by worship at His roseate feet.
He stood on earth, His dart shot forth, and to my thought
Linked Himself;- Perun-turrai's Lord ! (12)
3. I do not know what mistakes I have made,
I do not know how to fold my hands and worship you,
I do not know how to escape from this birth,
yet the god of Thirupperundurai
has thrown his spear of devotion into my heart. [619]
IV. He came in grace.
He stood before me, rooting out my 'twofold deeds,'-
The mighty Ruler Who at last shall cut off 'birth';
Lord of the south; in Perun-turrai great in grace,
Who dwells; Balm of all human woes ! (16)
4. The generous lord, the king of the south,
the compassionate god of the Thirupperundurai
took away my good and bad karma and my future births
and came before me.
The compassionate lord is the remedy
that cures the sorrows of his devotees [620]
V. Praise superfluous.
To them that know what word can praise the King? - Him, Who
All worlds brought forth, Whom Vedic god and Mal knew not;
The mighty Lord, Whose seat is Perun-turrai's shrine;-
In me to-day, and evermore ! (20)
5. Brahma the creator of the world
and Thirumal could not find the feet or the head of the lord
and became confused, yet he, the god of Thirupperundurai,
has entered my heart and stayed there without leaving me. [621]
VI. The bliss of His advent.
He filled with frenzy; set me free from 'births'; my soul
With speechless fervours thrilled,- blest Perun-turrai's Lord,-
The Sire in grace exceeding made me His; the balm
For all my pain; the deathless BLISS ! (24)
6. My lord, the god of Thirupperundurai,
a sweet nectar that never loses its taste,
made me crazy, removed my future births,
made me silent, intoxicated me with devotion,
entered my heart, gave me his grace and made me his. [622]
VII. Leading and light.
He showed the realm where 'births' return no more; He came
In grace that no requital knows, Ambrosia sating not !
This is the light diffus'd within my thought by Him,
The Lord of Perun-turrai's shrine ! (28)
7. The path he showed me that not everyone can find
is the nectar that removes this birth.
He, the matchless god of the southern Tirupperundurai,
entered my heart and made it shine. [623]
VIII. Condescending love.
Glorious, exalted over all, the Infinite,-
To me mere slave, lowest of all, Thou hast assigned
A place in bliss supreme, that none beside have gained or known !
Great Lord, what can I do for Thee? (32)
8. He is the best and the most famous
and I am the least and lowest.
My dear lord gave me joy that no one has received.
What can I give him back? [624]
IX. Unparalleled gift.
The three, the thirty-three, all other gods beside
See Thee not, Civan, mighty Lord ! Riding the steed
Hither descending didst Thou come. When at Thy foot
I lowly bow, bliss thrills my frame ! (36)
9. The three gods, Brahma, Thirumal, and Rudra,
the thirty-three gods and all the other gods
could not see the lord Shiva,
but he came to the earth riding on a horse
and I saw him and worshiped his ornamented feet
and my body filled with joy. [625]
X. Be not afraid to ask of Him.
Soul, ponder His twain feet Who here made me His own !
Beg for HIs grace ! Behold, He will give all,- the King
Who grace bestows,- Whose seat is Perun-turrai's shrine,-
Dwelling ambrosial in my soul ! (40)
10. The generous god of Thirupperundurai.
came to me and made me his.
O heart, think of his feet and worship him.
He will enter you as the remedy
that takes away all your troubles
and gives you all the things you want. [626]
XI. Light and love from His indwelling.
He hath increased delight, hath darkness banished,
For aye cut off afflictions' clinging bond, and light
Of love hath given,- the Lord of Perun-turrai great,
Well pleased to make my heart His home ! (44)
11. The god of famous Thirupperundurai
gave me great joy, removed my troubles,
took away all my sorrows and loved me,
entering my heart and happily making it his place. [627]
