fiery orb discus adorning your right shoulder, many and many a thousand

became the Lord of the Universe and eradicated the Asuras and Rāksasas,
thick as a dense brush. O Devotee-slaves of Bhagavan, come and worship
His feet and chant His thousand names. Give up the hubris of high and sing Pallandu. 1.1.5 |

6. My father, his father’s father, and grandfather before him, well over
seven generations, rendered service to Bhagavan. In Asterism of
Sravanam, at dusk, He took the form of Man-Lion and destroyed the enemy.
To expiate and obtain release from the bondage (the sin of murder), let
us sing Pallandu Pallayiraththāndu. (அரி

We are branded with the radiant fiery sacred discus and serve Bhagavan
over many generations. He deployed His discus on illusory
Vāṇan,
ripped his thousand shoulders wherefrom the blood ran (like a river). To
that Discus Wielder, let us chant Pallandu. 1.1.7 |

Bhagavan bestows on me, Butter-rice, the opportunity to do service,
Pan-supari, ornaments for the neck and ears, and Sandalwood paste to
smear. Bhagavan, whose banner is Garuda, which kills the enemy-snakes,
ensures good conduct in me.
To that flag-holder, I sing Pallandu. 1.1.8 |

O Lord, we wear your discarded yellow clothes, eat the food left over
after offerings to you, and rejoice ourselves by wearing Tulsi (Sacred
basil) garlands worn and discarded by you. We the
toṇṭars (Devotee-Slaves) chant Pallandu on the sacred day of Tiruvonam,
as You rest on the coils of the five-hooded snake. 1.1.9 |

10. The day, Emperuman declared us His vassals, is the very day we the
servitors at your feet through generations past attained liberation. On
the auspicious day of Tiruvonam, You made an appearance in the sacred
city of Mathura, destroyed the arsenal (of Kamsa), and danced on the
five-hooded snake (named Kalia). I chant the Pallandu. 1.1.10 |

11. O Tirumal, I am your servitor from yore like the faultless Kottiyur
Selva Nambi. To cultivate a mind of desirelessness, I chant your many
names like Namo Narayana. O the Pure, I chant Pallandu. 1.1.11

12. The Pallandu-fame pure One is the Wielder of Sarangam bow.
Villiputtur Chittan spoke these sweet words with love, saying this was a
good year for them too. The servitors, singing and chanting
Namo Narayanaya surround
and praise the Paramatman and chant Pallandu. 1.1.12 |

13. When the lord Sri Krishna Kesava was born in Tirukkottiyur of
beautiful mansions, they spilled oil and turmeric powder on one another,
slushing the portico of Krishna’s house. (2.1) |

They ran and fell, then rose and greeted joyously, asking, “Where is our
lord?” Singers, dancers, and drummers everywhere thronged the cowherds’

Soon after the protected child was born, they poured into the nursery to
see him and came out saying, “He has no match!", “He shall rule the
Earth!", “Tiruvonam is his star! 2.3 |

The cowherd-folk poured out good milk, curds, and Ghee from the
rope-shelf, overturned the empty pots in the portico, and danced on
them, tossing their disheveled hair, and lost their minds.

Forest-dwellers came pouring in, with teeth as white as the fresh Mullai
blossom, wearing woven bark cloth, carrying a staff, an ax, and a
sleeping mat woven from screw pine fiber; they smeared themselves with

She washed her child in a bathtub, gently stretching his arms and legs.
Then she opened his mouth to clean the tongue with a piece of tender
turmeric and saw the seven worlds in his gaping mouth. 2.6 |

When the other good ladies saw the Universe in his mouth, they exclaimed
with glee, “this is no ordinary cowherd-child, but the blessed lord
himself, endowed with all the auspicious qualities.” (2.7) |

After ten days and two, the cowherds erected festooned pillars on all
four sides and then lifted the child from the cradle, singing
“The-prince-who- lifted-the-wild elephants-mountain-

Lay him in the cradle, and he kicks as it would break; take him to the
waist, and he clings like a wrench; hold him in front, and he trounces

nectar-sweet Devaki gave to the coiffured dame Yasoda. See the innocent
child grab his foot and suck his toe! |

Bright forehead Ladies, come here and see the gem-hued lord’s feet, full
with ten little toes like pearls, garnets, and diamonds set in gold all
over. |

Beautiful Ladies, come here and see, this child sleeps after sucking
from the milk-laden breasts of a young slender Gopi of bamboo-like arms.
His two feet are adorned with silver anklets.

ஓரோர்தடாவுண்ண

Full-breasted Ladies, come here and see the beautiful knees of this
child. He ate the butter from every pot. so painstakingly collected by
his unfortunate mother and incurred her wrath. When she pulled him up
and threatened him with a churning rope, he cringed away in fear! |

Ladies of risen breasts, come here and see the thighs of this child, who
drained the bright ogress Putana's breasts with relish and lay like a
sleeping child. Long ago, he tore apart the hate-filled chest of Hiranya
Kasipu.

born on the tenth day from Hastam, front the womb of Devaki, dear to
Vasudev who owns might}- elephants.

threaded with corals and pearls, as he runs dragging a killed
rut-elephant by its trunk. |

of this child born to Nandagopa; like an elephant he plays with himself,
ignoring the teams of children who have come to play. |

Bright-bangled Ladies, come here and see the beautiful radiant stomach
of the dark ocean-hued lord. His mother gave him a sweet suck, then
stealthily bound him with an old rope without rousing him. |

adorned with a dazzling pendant. Tethered to a huge mortar, lie crawled

About four or five months old, he smote the devilish cart and sucked the
life out of the brightly smiling ogress Putana. |

Beautiful Ladies, come here and see. The cowherd-child whom the
bee-humming flower-coiffured dame Yasoda bring up as her own son,
swallowed the Universe and all the worlds in it. O see his beautiful

wearing gem-set jewels, come here and see! Amorous cowherd girls lift
this child saying, “Come, my lion cub,'' Press him against their coral
lips and drink the sap that oozes from his red berry
lips.

O Ladies
with dense coiffure, come here and see. With freshly ground turmeric,
Yasoda carefully bathes the child and cleans his tongue. See his eyes,
nose, mouth, and smile.

மண் கொள் வசுதேவர் தம் மகனாய் வந்து
திண் கொள் அசுரரைத் தேய வளர்கின்றான்
கண்கள் இருந்தவா காணீரே,
கனவளையீர்! வந்து காணீரே! |

O Gold-bangled Ladies, come here and see. To end the miseries of the
gods in heaven, he has taken birth on Earth as Vasudev's child and grows
up destroying mighty Asuras. See his eyes. |
39. பருவம் நிரம்பாமே பாரெல்லாம் உய்ய
திருவின் வடிவு ஒக்கும்
தேவகி பெற்ற
உருவு கரிய ஒளி மணிவண்ணன்
புருவம் இருந்தவா காணீரே,

39. O Jewel-breasted Ladies, come
here and see. This child whom Lakshmi-like Devaki begot, has a dark
frame like a radiant black gem. Even before coming of age, he delivers
the whole world. See his shapely eyebrows. (17) |

மண்ணும் மலையும் கடலும் உலகு
ஏழும்
உண்ணும் திறத்து மகிழ்ந்து உண்ணும் பிள்ளைக்கு
வண்ணம் எழில்கொள் மகரக் குழை இவை
திண்ணம் இருந்தவா காணீரே,
சேயிழையீர்! வந்து காணீரே!

O Jeweled Ladies, come here and see the well-made Makara- like golden
earrings of this child. During Pralaya he gorges himself joyously with
the seven worlds, the seven lands, the seven mountains, and the seven
oceans. (18) |

முற்றிலும் தூதையும் முன் கைம்மேல் பூவையும்
சிற்றில் இழைத்துத் திரிதரு
வோர்களைப்
பற்றிப் பறித்துக் கொண்டு

O Ladies with excellent jewels, come here and see the forehead of the
lord. He snatches the winnow plates, pots, and Palm-leaf dolls from
girls playing ‘house’ in the sand, and runs away. |

அழகிய பைம்பொன்னின் கோல் அங்கைக் கொண்டு
கழல்கள் சதங்கை கலந்து
எங்கும் ஆர்ப்ப
மழ கன்றினங்கள் மறித்துத்
திரிவான்

O Full-breasted Ladies, come
here and see the curly locks of this child. He rounds up a herd of young
calves and goes roaming with a golden staff in his beautiful hands, his
sandals and his anklets striking a merry jingle.

These twenty-one songs by Pattarbiran of Puduvai fame recall the
foot-to-head adoration of Krishna by Yasoda of yore. Those who sing it
will go and live in Vaikunta.

alternating with beautiful pear-shaped drops, perfectly befitting your

The generous Vaisravana, lord of the Northern Quarter stands betwixt
with folded hands, offering a necklace of charms shaped like Vishnu's
five weapons, — conch, discus, dagger, mace, and bow, — befitting your
radiant chest, Talelo. O, Faultless gem-hued Lord, Talelo. |

with prized corals and a string of lustrous pearls from the deep ocean.

Goddess Earth has sent a golden diaper pin, golden bangles, a
jewel-studded forehead pendant, and a hairpin with flowers of gold
marked, ‘For Achyuta'. O, Child who sucked the poisoned breast, Talelo.
Narayana, don’t cry, Talelo. |

மெய் திமிரும் நானப் பொடியோடு மஞ்சளும்
செய்ய தடங்கண்ணுக்கு அஞ்சனமும் சிந்தூரமும்
வெய்ய கலைப்பாகி கொண்டு உவளாய் நின்றாள்

The deer-riding goddess Parvati stands betwixt, with gifts of refreshing
bath fragrance and turmeric powder, collyrium for your large lotus eyes,
and vermillion power. O, Sir don’t cry, don’t cry, Talelo. Lord
reclining on a serpent in Tiru Arangam, Talelo. |

வஞ்சனையால் வந்த பேய்ச்சி முலை உண்ட
அஞ்சன வண்ணனை ஆய்ச்சி தாலாட்டிய
செஞ்சொல் மறையவர் சேர் புதுவைப்பட்டன் சொல்
எஞ்சாமை வல்லவர்க்கு இல்லை
இடர் தானே. |

This decad by Pattarbiran of Puduvai fame, where pure-tongued Vedic
seers live, recalls the Talattu of Yasoda sung for the dark-hued lord
who drank the deceitful ogress Putana’s breast. Those who recite it
without fault will have no sorrow. |

சுட்டி தூங்கத் தூங்கத் தவழ்ந்து போய்
பொன்முகக் கிண்கிணி ஆர்ப்பப் புழுதி அளைகின்றான்
என் மகன் கோவிந்தன் கூத்தினை இள

நின் முகம் கண்ணுள ஆகில் நீ இங்கே நோக்கிப்போ. |

O, Tender Moon! If you have eyes on your face, come and see my child
Govinda’s pranks as he crawls, kicking up dust. His forehead pendant
sways, and his golden anklet jingles. |

என் சிறுக்குட்டன் எனக்கு ஓர் இன்னமுது
எம்பிரான்
தன் சிறுக் கைகளால் காட்டிக்காட்டி அழைக்கின்றான்
அஞ்சன வண்ணனோடு ஆடல் ஆட உறுதியேல்
மஞ்சில் மறையாதே மா மதீ! மகிழ்ந்து ஓடிவா. |

O, Great Moon! My dark-hued little child, my sweet ambrosia, my master
calls, and beckons to you with his wee hands. If you wish to play with
him, do not hide behind the clouds. Come running here happily. |

சுற்றும் ஒளிவட்டம் சூழ்ந்து சோதி பரந்து எங்கும்
எத்தனை செய்யிலும் என் மகன் முகம் நேரொவ்வாய்
வித்தகன் வேங்கட
வாணன் உன்னை
விளிக்கின்ற
கைத்தலம் நோவாமே,

Bright Moon with rounds of halo spreading light everywhere! With all
that, you are no match for my son’s face. The wonder lord, the resident
of Venkatam, calls. Come running quickly, lest you cause pain to his
hand. |

சக்கரக் கையன் தடங்கண்ணால் மலர விழித்து
ஒக்கலைமேல் இருந்து உன்னையே
சுட்டிக் காட்டும்,
காண்
தக்கது அறிதியேல் சந்திரா! சலம் செய்யாதே

O, Full Moon! The discus-wielding lord with his large eyes opened wide,
seated on my waist, points at you alone. Know what is proper, and do not
deceive him. If you are not childless sterile (a barren woman), take
note and come. |

அழகிய வாயில் அமுத ஊறல் தெளிவுற
மழலை
முற்றாத இளஞ்சொல்லால் உன்னைக்
கூவுகின்றான்

O, Big bright Moon! The adorable Sridhara with spittle dripping from his
beautiful mouth, blabbers indistinctly, coos, and calls to you. If you
go on ignoring his calls, would it not mean that your ears are without a
bore (ear canals)? |

தண்டொடு சக்கரம் சார்ங்கம் ஏந்தும் தடக்கையன்
கண் துயில்கொள்ளக் கருதிக் கொட்டாவி கொள்கின்றான்
உண்ட முலைப் பால் அறா கண்டாய் உறங்காவிடில்
விண்தனில் மன்னிய மா மதீ! விரைந்து ஓடி
வா. |

O, Big Moon set in the wide sky! The lord with mighty arms that hold the

மாலை மதியாதே மா மதீ! மகிழ்ந்து ஓடிவா. |
