first and the last verses in each chapter: 1 and 10; 11 and 20… This, I hope will capture the message of Valluvar.
I have parsed the Tamil Compound Words into lexemes for
easy understanding. English meaning of Tamil words follows Tamil Lexicon of
Madras university. |

அகர முதல எழுத்து
எல்லாம் ஆதி பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு. 0001 A is the first among all letters; (likewise) the Primal
God is the first in the world. |
பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார் இறைவன் அடி சேராதார்.0010 The
Great Ocean of Birth the Swimmer swim not, if he did
not attain the feet of the All-Abider (God). |
வான்
நின்று உலகம் வழங்கி வருதலால் தான்அமிழ்தம் என்று உணரறல் பாற்று.0011 From the rain, the world draws its sustenance; thus it deserves accolades as ambrosia. |
நீர்
இன்று அமையாது உலகு எனின் யார் யார்க்கும் வான்
இன்று அமையாது ஒழுக்கு.0020 Without water, the world does not function. Thus said,
without rain, there is no natural spring of water. |
ஒழுக்கத்து நீத்தார் பெருமை விழுப்பத்து வேண்டும் பனுவல் துணிவு. 0021 Thinking at the
beginning of a treatise of the greatness of conduct and relinquishment of desire
by great men offers goodness. |
அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர்
மற்று எவ்வுயிர்க்கும் செம்
தண்மை பூண்டு ஒழுகலான். 0030 Since they
entertain compassion to all other living beings, they are the repository of
Dharma. |
சிறப்பு ஈனும் செல்வமும் ஈனும் அறத்தின்
ஊங்கு ஆக்கம் எவனோ உயிர்க்கு. 0031 It (Virtue)
offers distinction and wealth. What other treasure is there beyond these for
the man? |
செயல்
பாலது ஓரும் அறனே ஒருவற்கு உயல் பாலது ஓரும் பழி. 0040 Virtue is the sum of all
permitted good acts; Vice is the sum of all forbidden evil acts. |
இல்வாழ்வான் என்பான் இயல்புடைய மூவர்க்கும் நல் ஆற்றில் நின்ற துணை.0041 The householder
in domestic life is the supportive helper of the threesome of akin nature: the relatives, the
friends, and the poor. |
வையத்துள் வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ்பவன் வான் உறையும் தெய்வத்துள் வைக்கப் படும்.0050 The observant householder is placed among the sky-dwelling (heavenly) gods. |
மனைத்தக்க மாண்பு உடையள் ஆகி தன் கொண்டான் வளம் தக்காள் வாழ்க்கைத் துணை. 0051 She of
excellence in spousal dignity spends within the means of her wedded husband
and is the appropriate spousal help in the domestic life. |
மங்கலம் என்ப மனை
மாட்சி மற்று அதன் நன் கலம் நன்
மக்கள் பேறு.0060 Auspiciousness is the greatness of a wife. Besides
that, good children are a jewel. |
பெறும் அவற்றுள் யாம் அறிவது இல்லை அறிவு அறிந்த
மக்கள் பேறு அல்ல பிற.0061 Among all acquisitions, intelligent children are the
asset. Otherwise, none else is worthy of possession. |
மகன் தந்தைக்கு ஆற்றும் உதவி இவன்
தந்தை என் நோற்றான் கொல்
எனும் சொல்.0070 What help a son offers
to a father is the saying (by others) what penance a father did to beget him.

கண் நீர் பூசல் தரும்.0071 Is there a fastening bolt
that bars love? Meager tear of the affectionate will announce the love by
raising an uproar. |
அன்பின் வழியது உயிர்
நிலை அஃது இலார்க்கு என்பு தோல் போர்த்த உடம்பு.0080 The sign of soul in the body
is the path of love. For those devoid of love the body is mere skeleton
wrapped with skin. |
இருந்து ஓம்பி இல்
வாழ்வது எல்லாம் விருந்து
ஓம்பி வேளாண்மை செய்தல் பொருட்டு.0081 The very purpose of leading
a domestic life is to cater to the needs of a guest. |
மோப்பக் குழையும் அனிச்சம் முகம்
திரிந்து நோக்க குழயும் விருந்து.0090 Scarlet pimpernel flower fades with smelling. Likewise, the guest
fades at the sight of sour face of the host. |

virtuous being sweet and compassionate are devoid of falsehood. |
இனிய உளவாக இன்னாத கூறல் கனி இருப்ப காய் கவர்ந்து
அற்று.100 When sweet words abound, saying bitter words is
like grasping the unripe in the place of ripe and sweet fruits. |
செய்யாமல் செய்த உதவிக்கு வையகமும் வானகமும் மாற்றல் அரிது.0101 Gratitude Gift of heaven and Earth will not recompense for help
received without prior gift to the donor. |
எந்நன்றி கொன்றார்க்கும் உய்வு உண்டாம் உய்வில்லை செய்ந்நன்றி கொன்ற மகற்கு.0110 There is refuge for the killers of kindness.
There is no refuge for those who killed gratitude. |
தகுதி என ஒன்று நன்றே பகுதியான் பால்பட்டு ஒழுகப் பெறின்.0111
Fairness Equity is a virtue, if you put yourself in the
place of a contrarian. |
வாணிகம் செய்வார்க்கு வாணிகம் பேணிப் பிறவும் தம்போல் செயின்.
0120 If the merchant does cherish his trade, he will
treat other’s property as his own. (The merchant will not shortchange the
customer.) |
அடக்கம் அமரர் உள் உய்க்கும் அடங்காமை ஆர் இருள் உய்த்து விடும்.0121
Restraint Self-restraint is a virtue that places man among
gods. Lack of it drives him into the thick of darkness. |
கதம் காத்து கற்று
அடங்கல் ஆற்றுவான் செவ்வி அறம் பார்க்கும் ஆற்றின் நுழைந்து. 0130 Having learnt to control anger and exercising
self-control, virtue will become his natural companion. |

விழுப்பம் தரலான்
ஒழுக்கம் உயிரினும்
ஓம்பப் படும்.0131 Virtuous Conduct Since
virtuous conduct gives greatness, it should be safeguarded
more than life itself. |
உலகத்தோடு
ஒட்ட ஒழுகல் பல
கற்றும் கல்லார்
அறிவிலாதார். 0140 Though learned in many arts, they who do not get along in this world are ignoramuses. |

0141 Avoiding Extramarital The
virtuous in the world do not succumb to the foolishness of desiring for
another’s wedded wife. |

நயவாமை நன்று. 0150 Though
an unjust person committed adharmic deeds, it is
proper not to covet neighbor’s wife for sexual pleasure. |

தம்மை இகழ்வார்ப்
பொறுத்தல் தலை. 0151 Avoiding Vindictiveness. As
the earth tolerates the digger of a hole, it is laudatory to put up with the
reviler. |

நோற்பாரின் பின். 0160. The
austere ascetics tolerating hunger pains are great. They are way behind those
who sustain mental distress from harsh words of others. |

இலாத இயல்பு. 0161 the unjealous As
the unjealous remains decorous in his mind, every man should have the nature
of good conduct. |

அஃது இல்லார்
பெருக்கத்தில்
தீர்ந்தாரும்
இல். 0170 No
one became rich from jealousy; no one lost his fortune from lack of jealousy.

ஆங்கே தரும். 0171 Avoiding Usurpation Desiring
to usurp unjustly legitimate property of the other, it brings ruination of family
and resultant evil. |

விறல் ஈனும் வேண்டாமை
என்னும் செருக்கு. 0180 Since
someone unthinkingly desires to usurp another’s property, ruination is his
lot. The greatness of avoiding usurpation gives him the strength of character.

0190 Allowing
one realizes the faults of others as equal to his faults, is there evil to
the lives in the world? |

சொல்லுவான் எல்லாரும்
எள்ளப் படும். 0191 Avoiding useless words Talking
useless words elicits from many people hatred, disgrace and dishonor. |

பயன் இலா சொல். 0200 When
you speak, speak useful words. Do not utter useless words in your speech. |

என்னும் செருக்கு. 201 Fear of doing evil Evil
doers will not be afraid to commit evil because of haughtiness. The excellent
will be afraid (to do such evil acts). |

செய்யான் எனின்.
0210 If a
person does not rush to inflict evil deed to another person, we know for sure
that he will not meet with disaster. |

வேண்டா கடப்பாடு
மாரி மாட்டு என் ஆற்றும்
கொல்லோ உலகு. 211 Selfless service Duty
does not seek a return reward. What kind of recompense can the world do for
the rain? |

வரும் கேடு எனின்
அஃது ஒருவன் விற்று
கோள் தக்கது உடைத்து. 220 If
munificence were to cause ruination (to the giver), its nature is that the
giver sold himself to fulfill its intent. |

ஒன்று ஈவதே ஈகை
மற்று எல்லாம்
குறி எதிர்ப்பை
நீரது உடைத்து.
221 Charity True
charity is to give to the poor. All other giving is of the nature of
expectation of specific benefits. |
சாதலின்

இனிது அதூஉம்
ஈதல் இயையாக்
கடை. 230 There
is nothing more miserable than death. Death is sweet, if there is no quality
of giving ( in that person). |

231. Fame Giving
to the poor is fame. If not for it, there is no use for life (or living). |

who live to remove calumny (and seeking no fame) are the truly living. He who
lives a life of infamy is empty of life. |

wealths, compassion is the real wealth. Even vile people have material

a person is overbearing a weaker person, he should think of putting himself before
the stronger overbearing person. |

ஆளும் அருள். 251 Chapter 26 Not eating flesh The
person in order to grow his muscles eats the flesh of an animal. How could he
be practicing compassion? |

புலாலை மறுத்தானை
கைகூப்பி எல்லா
உயிரும் தொழும். 260 With
opposed palms all life forms will worship the person, who is neither a
butcher nor a flesh eater. |

தவத்திற்கு உரு. 261 Chapter 27 Tapas = Penance To
tolerate one’s miseries and desisting from causing misery to other beings are
the attributes of Tapas (penance). |

பலர் நோலாதவர். 270 The have-nots (of penitence) became many for the reason
there are only a few ascetics (நோற்பார்).

271 Chapter 28 கூடாவொழுக்கம்
= Improper or immoral
conduct (Tamil Lexicon) An ascetic living a lie is the
subject of ridicule inside (his body) by the five elements. An ascetic in appearance and an
epicure in practice is subject to ridicule by the five elements that makes
his body. |

உலகம் பழித்தது
ஒழித்து விடின். 280 If the
worldly reproachable acts are abandoned, shaving the head or growing long
hair are unnecessary. |

காக்க தன் நெஞ்சு. 281. Chapter 29 கள்ளாமை Non-stealth He,
who desires not to invite infamy, should guard against thoughts of stealing

290 The
thieves suffer setbacks in life. The non-stealers will obtain the world of
gods without any delay. |

சொலல். 291 Chapter 30 வாய்மை Truth in word Truth
in word is to utter words that cause no harm. |

all we found as Truth, there is nothing as good as the truthful word. |

என் காவாக்கால். 301 Chapter 31 Not getting angry For a
man who controls his anger towards the meek, what does it matter whether he
controls it or not in other places. |

angry men are like the dead men. Those who forsake anger are like the
renouncing ascetics. |

இன்னா செய்யாமை மாசு அற்றார் கோள். 311 Chapter 32 Not doing Evil Though
one obtains glory-yielding wealth, not doing evil to others is the nature of
stainless men. |
நோய் எல்லாம் நோய் செய்தார் மேல ஆம் நோய் செய்யார் நோய் இன்மை வேண்டுபவர். 320 All
evil befalls the evildoer. The Seeker of no evil will not commit evil. |
அறவினை யாது எனின் கொல்லாமை கோறல் பிறவினை எல்லாம் தரும். 321 Chapter 33 Not killing What
is Virtuous Work? It is not killing. Killing causes other evils. |
உயிர் உடம்பின் நீக்கியார் என்ப செயிர் உடம்பின் செல்லா தீ வாழ்க்கை யவர். 330 Persons
who took away life (in the previous life) are the ones who live a life of
interminable illnesses. |
நில்லாதவற்றை நிலையின என்று உணரும் புல் அறிவாண்மை கடை. 331 Chapter 34 Non-eternal A
person of low intelligence feels the non-eternal is eternal. |
புக்கு இல் அமைந்தின்று கொல்லோ உடம்பினுள் துச்சில் இருந்த உயிர்க்கு. 340 The
soul found a temporal shelter in the body: Is it because it did not find an
eternal abode? |
யாதனின் யாதனின் நீங்கியான் நோதல் அதனின் அதனின் இலன். 341 Chapter 35 Renunciation From
whatever-whatever man removes himself, from that-that man will not suffer any
hurt. |
பற்றுக பற்றற்றான் பற்றினை அப்பற்றைப் பற்றுக பற்று விடற்கு. 350 To
abandon desires, cling to the Desireless (God); continue to cling to that
desire. |
பொருள்
அல்லவற்றை பொருள் என்று உணரும் மருளான்
மாணாப் பிறப்பு. 351 Chapter
36 Realization of the Truth. The confused who considers
the unreal as the Real (God) takes birth as a low life. |
காமம் வெகுளி மயக்கம் இவை மூன்றன் நாமம் கெட கெடும் நோய். 360 Upon extinction
of the three names (defects) Avarice, Anger, and Ignorance, malady (of
rebirth) will perish. |
அவா என்ப எல்லா உயிர்க்கும் எஞ்ஞான்றும் தவாஅ பிறப்பு ஈனும் வித்து. 361
Chapter 37 Removal
of Desire Desire is the birth-causing Seed without remiss at
all times for all living beings. |
ஆரா இயற்கை அவா நீப்பின் அந்நிலையே பேரா இயற்கை தரும். 370 Desire
is irrepressible. If you were to remove it, that state will yield (you) the
nature of Immutability. |
ஆகு ஊழால் தோன்றும் அசைவு இன்மை கைப்பொருள் போகு ஊழால் தோன்றும் மடி. 371 Chapter 38 Past Karma
Fruits. Salubrious
Past Karma brings wealth without weariness. Insalubrious Past Karma brings
indolence. |
ஊழில் பெருவலி யாவுள? மற்றொன்று சூழினும் தான்முந்து
ஊறும். 380 What
is stronger than the Past Karma? Whatever stratagem is put
in place to change it, it will stand in the forefront. |

the king) |

படை குடி கூழ் அமைச்சு நட்பு அரண் ஆறும் உடையான் அரசருள் ஏறு. 381 Chapter 39 Greatness of king Army,
Subjects, Wealth, Government (Minister), Friends, and Fort are the six
attributes that make the king the greatest among kings. |
கொடை அளி செங்கோல் குடி ஓம்பல் நான்கும் உடையாநன்
ஆம் வேந்தர்க்கு ஒளி. 390 Giving,
Clemency, impartial
administration of justice,
Protection of subjects’ physical welfare and property rights are the four
that make a king a splendor to kings. |
கற்க கசடு அற கற்பவை கற்றபின் நிற்க அதற்கு தக. 391 The three Rs.
Learn
without any defects. After what one should learn is at hand, a conduct
commensurate with that learning is in order. |
கேடு இல் விழுச் செல்வம் கல்வி ஒருவற்கு மாடு அல்ல மற்றையவை. 400 For a person, impeccable education
is in imperishable wealth. Other kinds of wealth are not sustainable. |
அரங்கு இன்றி வட்டு ஆடி அற்றே நிரம்பிய நூல் இன்றிக் கோட்டி கொளல். 401 Chapter 41 Not
learning To
talk in an assembly without full knowledge is like playing chess without
chess pieces. |
விலங்கொடு மக்கள் அனையர் இலங்கு நூல் கற்றாரோடு ஏனையவர். 410 Men
proximate to the erudite men learned in literary works are like animals
proximate to people. |
செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் செவிச்செல்வம் அச்செல்வம் செல்வத்துள் எல்லாம் தலை. 411 Aural Wealth Chapter 42 Of
wealth, aural wealth is the greatest and the highest. Aural wealth = Learning
by hearing |
செவியின் சுவை உணரா வாய் உணர்வின் மாக்கள் அவியினும் வாழினும் என். 420 People
who know taste by the palate but not by the ears: it does not matter whether
they live or die. |
அறிவு அற்றம் காக்கும் கருவி செறுவார்க்கும் உள் அழிக்கலாகா அரண். 421 Having Knowledge Chapter 43 Wisdom
is an instrument that wards off ruin. It is the inner and impenetrable
fortress, which the enemies cannot destroy. |
அறிவுடையார் எல்லாம் உடையார் அறிவிலார் என் உடையரேனும் இலர். 430 The
wise possess all. The ignoramuses with other wealth possess nothing. |
செருக்கும் சினமும் சிறுமையும் இல்லார் பெருக்கம் பெருமித நீர்த்து. 431 Removal of faults Chapter 44 With no Haughtiness, Anger,
and Small-mindedness, these men’s increasing riches are worthy of greatness. |
காதல காதல் அறியாமை உய்க்கில்
பின் ஏது இல ஏதிலார் நூல். 440 If you were to remove the
ignorance to attain all desired objects, the enemy’s designs entail no
causality. |
அறன் அறிந்து மூத்த அறிவுடையார் கேண்மை திறன் அறிந்து தேர்ந்து கொளல். 441 Having the help of the Great Men. Chapter 45 One should seek the help of
the virtuous Intellectuals with mature knowledge, after assessing their
ability. |
பல்லார் பகை கொளலில் பத்தடுத்த தீமைத்தே நல்லார் தொடர்கை விடல். 450 Loss of connection with the
virtuous causes ten times more evil than the enmity with many. |
சிற்றினம் அஞ்சும் பெருமை சிறுமைதான் சுற்றமா சூழ்ந்து விடும். 451 Avoiding the mean kind Chapter 46 Greatness fears the mean
kind. Meanness will become the kinsmen (if the great
are not careful). |
நல் இனத்தின் ஊங்கும் துணை இல்லை தீ இனத்தின் அல்லல் படுப்பதூஉம் இல். 460 There is no greater help
than the virtuous kind; there is no misfortune greater than the association
with the evil kind. |
அழிவதூஉம் ஆவதூஉம் ஆகி வழிபயக்கும் ஊதியமும் சூழ்ந்து செயல். 461 Know before you act Chapter 47 (Before a task begins)
expenses, achievements and gains on its path should be points for
consideration. |
எள்ளாத எண்ணிச் செயல்வேண்டும் தம்மோடு கொள்ளாத கொள்ளாது உலகு. 470 Think of the irreproachable
and do it. What is unacceptable to you is also unacceptable to the world. |
வினைவலியும் தன்வலியும் மாற்றான் வலியும் துணைவலியும் தூக்கிச் செயல். 471 knowing your strength Ch. 48 The worthiness of a deed,
the strength of oneself, of the opponent and also of
the helper should be weighed before one acts. |
உளவரை தூக்காத ஒப்புரவாண்மை வளவரை வல்லைக் கெடும். 480 Not knowing the limitations
of munificence, the limited wealth will soon dissipate. |
பகல் வெல்லும் கூகையைக் காக்கை இகல் வெல்லும் வேந்தர்க்கு வேண்டும் பொழுது. 481 Timing and knowing it Ch. 49 The crow will win over the
owl in the day. Likewise, the king should know the time to win over his
enemy. |
கொக்கு ஒக்க கூம்பும் பருவத்து மற்று அதன் குத்து ஒக்க சீர்த்த இடத்து. 490 The heron lays low until the
seasonable time, wherein it strikes its prey; likewise, one should act at a
moment’s notice. |
